I N T R O D U C I N G
A collection of artworks that delve a little deeper into our human desires and the things that we are all in pursuit of. Contemplative reflections exploring a surreal landscape using abstract symbols – exploring all that we have in this world, all that we hope for, and all that we love. When we strip away the daily distractions of life it becomes clear that we are all compelled and driven by the pursuit of finding inner peace, to calm our inner-restlessness. This Dreamscape collection highlights this humanistic journey and focuses our minds towards the things that we’re truly living for. It’s important to illuminate our hopes because without a compelling vision of our desired destination we can lose our way. Defined visions of our desired futures keeps us living with purpose and momentum.
‘Hopes and dreams can be the things that end up saving us from ourselves.’
During a trip away to travel the world I began work on a new collection of artworks. These drawings from my sketch book now finished digitally form this new collection of artworks titled Dreamscape.
Sometimes I sketch to make sense of all of the ideas, hopes and frustrations that exist in my head. During my travels around the world when my mind was open and I had left behind everything that had felt stable and familiar, sketching was a daily activity. I began to see life from a different perspective. For example when I was in Sri-Lanka I learnt that despite the physical landscape changing or the vast gap between the material things we have, the things we are all seeking as humans are the same – and they unite us. Those deep-set beliefs and values transcend the physical world. I chose to go travelling because I felt this inner-restlessness inside of me, I believe many of us have an inner-restlessness inside of us. As we move through life we seek to explore the world, we strive for things, we work for achievements or seek companionship in order to calm this inner restlessness. We find this sense of inner-peace within different things and it continues to change and shift because we are always growing as people. But ultimately I have learnt that the hopes and dreams we have in life are the things that save us. They keep us chasing after the things we believe will make us happy – even if in the end we discover an alternative destination than what we set out for.
This collection of drawings in black and white, and sepia offer us a glimpse at some of those intangible things we are all seeking to obtain. Some of the drawings include abstract signs and symbols as we venture through a surreal plain of existence. The pieces aim to make sense of a world that doesn’t always appear to make sense to us.
‘The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance.’ [Aristotle]
